The Sao Paulo Grand Prix qualifying session delivered a shocking twist as Max Verstappen, the reigning champion, unexpectedly crashed out in Q1, leaving Lando Norris to seize pole position. But the drama didn't end there, as Norris' teammate Oscar Piastri, recovering from an earlier crash, set the pace in Q3's initial runs, only for Norris to snatch the fastest lap in the final moments.
But here's where it gets controversial: Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli, who had been a consistent challenger, finished a mere 0.174s behind Norris, securing P2. This left Ferrari's Charles Leclerc in P3, with Piastri in fourth. The top five was completed by Isack Hadjar of Racing Bulls, while George Russell of Mercedes claimed sixth.
As the qualifying progressed, the tension rose. Lewis Hamilton, the seven-time champion, failed to make it past P13, mirroring his SQ2 exit in the Sprint Qualifying. Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin) and Alex Albon (Williams) just managed to stay ahead of Hamilton, with their teammates Lance Stroll and Carlos Sainz trailing behind.
And this is the part most people miss: Verstappen's early exit in Q1 was a major talking point, as he struggled for grip and finished in P16. His teammate, Yuki Tsunoda, also had a disappointing session, exiting in P19. Haas' Esteban Ocon and Alpine's Franco Colapinto couldn't capitalize, finishing in 17th and 18th, respectively, while Gabriel Bortoleto's earlier crash left him unable to participate, ending up in 20th.
Q2 saw Norris and Antonelli battle it out once more, with Norris taking P1 and Hamilton exiting in P13. Alonso, Albon, Stroll, and Sainz were also eliminated, setting the stage for a thrilling Q3.
In the final showdown, Norris and Antonelli secured the front row, with Leclerc, Bearman, and Gasly completing the top five. Norris' final lap of 1m 09.511s sealed his pole position, with Antonelli in P2 and Leclerc in P3. Piastri's improved performance earned him fourth, and Hadjar impressed in fifth.
Norris reflected on the challenging conditions, saying, "It was slippery and inconsistent, but good fun. I felt the pressure after locking up on my first lap, but I stayed calm and delivered when it mattered."
