How many horses died at the Grand National 2025? (1)

Millions of people from across the world tuned in to watch this year's Grand National at Aintree.

The iconic race got underway at 4pm on Saturday afternoon with 34 horses competing for the top prize in what was the 177th running of the world-famous steeplechase race.

After galloping nearly 7km and jumping 30 fences the race was won by 33/1 Nick Rockett, who was ridden by Patrick Mullins and trained by his father, Willie.

This year, 34 runners set off, with 16 finishers.

As of Sunday afternoon, no horses suffered fatal injuries in the main race - however in the four-day festival, one horse died.

During the Grand National race on Saturday, two horses were injured and were assessed on course. Broadway Boy was leading for most of the race when it fell at the 25th fence.

Celebre d'Allen collapsed on the course after the final fence. Its jockey, Micheal Nolan, has been suspended for 10 days following the collapse.

A Jockey Club spokesperson said on Saturday evening both Broadway Boy and Celebre d'Allen had been able to return to the stables following extensive on-course treatment.

"Broadway Boy walked on to the horse ambulance and will return to the stables for further assessment," they said.

On Sunday, joint-trainer White provided an encouraging bulletin following Celebre d'Allen's overnight stay in Liverpool.

White said: "He’s had his stay at Aintree and I’ve seen videos of him this morning looking much brighter in himself and he’s been out for a pick of grass.

"The vets have seen him and he’s probably going to travel to a livery yard close to Aintree later today. It’s positive news and he’s going the right way.

“In the heat of the moment, I haven’t really spoken to the vets about what it really is, but it was probably a combination of the heat and everything. The main thing now is he’s back on the right track.

“It’s great for us that it looks like he’s going to be OK.”

Meanwhile, the Nigel Twiston Davies-trained Broadway Boy was making his way home to his Gloucestershire stable on Sunday after also staying at Aintree overnight.

In an update Willy Twiston-Davies, assistant to his father, said: “It sounds a lot more positive and he’s coming home. There’s going to be a couple of weeks of uncertainty for future racing.

“But it looks a lot more positive than it did yesterday and the most important thing is our horse is coming home and should be OK.

“His welfare for the next few weeks is the most important thing and the vets at Aintree did a tremendous job and Laura Scrivener, who looked after him all night, was fantastic with him and our boy’s coming home.”

One fatality in Grand National festival

Before the race, one horse had already died during this year's festival.

Four-year-old Willy De Houelle, owned by Susannah Ricci and ridden by Rachel Blackmore, took a tumble on the fourth hurdle out from the finishing line.

A shaken Blackmore got back to her feet to be helped into an ambulance but Willy De Houelle unfortunately could not be saved.

Ahead of the Grand National in 2024, The Jockey Club announced a number of changes in a bid to reduce the number of falling horses and injuries.

They included moving the start time to 4pm and reducing the field from 40 to 34 horses.

The first fence has also been moved 60 yards nearer to the start - with the aim that runners will approach it at a slower speed.

The height of the 11th fence has also been reduced by two inches to 4ft 10ins.
