macOS Tahoe 26.2 Beta: Edge Light - Your New Virtual Ring Light! (2025)

Tired of looking like a shadowy figure in your video calls? The latest macOS Tahoe beta 26.2 introduces a game-changing feature called Edge Light, designed to brighten your face and elevate your video presence. This new feature is coming to Apple silicon Macs later this year. It's essentially a virtual ring light, accessible right from your menu bar alongside familiar options like Backgrounds, Center Stage, and Portrait mode. Say goodbye to unflattering shadows and hello to a well-lit you on FaceTime, Zoom, and other video conferencing platforms, especially as the days get shorter.

This innovation is remarkably simple in concept, yet brilliantly executed. When you activate Edge Light, a bright, adjustable border appears around the outer edge of your Desktop. You can customize the brightness and color temperature, mimicking the functionality of professional LED lights used in video production. The virtual ring light sits atop your Desktop and windows, but cleverly fades as your cursor approaches, ensuring your screen content remains fully visible.

But here's where it gets interesting... Edge Light is powered by the magic of Apple silicon, leveraging the Mac's Neural Engine for facial detection and the Image Signal Processor to dynamically adjust the light's intensity based on your surrounding environment. While all Apple silicon Macs running Tahoe 26.2 will support Edge Light, models released in 2024 or later will gain an additional perk: the ability to automatically enable the feature when low-light conditions are detected.

During my testing, I found Edge Light to be effective in dimly lit rooms, though its impact lessens as the room brightens. And this is the part most people miss... I also observed that the automatic setting seemed to produce a brighter light than when manually adjusted, even though the brightness slider remained unchanged. This could be a beta quirk, so we'll have to see how it evolves. I was also pleased to see how the virtual ring light widened as I increased the brightness.

I personally have lights set up around my desk for recording video, but most people don't have that luxury. For them, Edge Light will be a welcome addition, eliminating those pesky shadows that can appear in the early morning or late afternoon. Even with my existing setup, I can see myself using Edge Light for convenience, whether I'm working on my laptop away from my desk or sitting right in front of my computer.

We'll have more details on macOS Tahoe 26.2 as it and Apple's other 26.2 releases exit beta.
