Unveiling the Hidden Treasures: A Musical Journey with Anna Urpina
Uncovering the Forgotten Voices of Baroque Music
In a captivating exploration of Baroque music, violinist Anna Urpina takes us on a journey to rediscover the works of female composers from a bygone era. Her new album, "Le Chant des Muses," shines a light on these hidden gems, offering a fresh perspective on a time when women's voices were often silenced.
But here's where it gets intriguing: Urpina, a master of both Baroque and modern violin techniques, has dedicated her talent to bringing these forgotten composers back into the spotlight. And this is the part most people miss—the story behind each composer, their struggles, and their remarkable resilience.
A Bridge Between Centuries
"Le Chant des Muses" is more than just an album; it's a musical bridge connecting the Baroque era to the present. Urpina has meticulously curated a collection of ten Baroque composers, including two contemporary female composers, Helena Cánovas and Zulema de la Cruz. This unique blend of old and new creates a captivating contrast, showcasing the evolution of music through the lens of female creativity.
Urpina's passion for this project is evident as she pays tribute to these courageous women. "They sought to express their unique voices, ideals, and emotions through music," she explains, "despite the societal and historical barriers they faced."
The Remarkable Discovery: Mademoiselle Duval
Among the composers featured, Mademoiselle Duval (c.1718-c.1775) stands out as Urpina's most remarkable find. "Her name was unknown to me until now," Urpina confesses. "Her music is a true masterpiece, capturing the elegance and sophistication of Versailles."
Duval's story is a testament to the power of music. Despite achieving fame during her lifetime, her music and legacy faded into obscurity. Urpina's world-premiere recording of Duval's "Les Génies ou les Caractères de l'Amour" gently breaks this silence, inviting us to rediscover a forgotten genius.
Instruments of Expression
Urpina's choice of instruments adds another layer of depth to her performance. For the Baroque pieces, she plays a 1658 violin by Nicolò Amati, capturing the soul of 17th-century music. In contrast, her 2007 violin by David Bagué brings the contemporary works to life, showcasing their expressive depth.
"The Amati violin perfectly embodies the sound and spirit of Baroque music," Urpina explains, "while my David Bagué violin allows me to explore the contemporary character of the modern pieces."
A Collaborative Effort
Urpina is not alone in this musical endeavor. She is joined by talented musicians, including organist and harpsichordist Daniel Oyarzabal, soprano María Hinojosa, cellist Nicola Brovelli, and theorbo & baroque guitarist Nacho Laguna. Together, they bring these compositions to life, creating a rich and diverse soundscape.
"Le Chant des Muses" will be released on Eudora Records on November 7, 2025. This album is a must-listen for music enthusiasts and a powerful reminder of the importance of uncovering and celebrating the works of female composers.
